China to curb hybrid exports to the EU: what it means for MG, BYD and Omoda in Poland

After talks in Beijing, the EU and China agreed that China will "moderate" exports of hybrids and plug-in hybrids to the bloc. Chinese brands had 15.6% of Poland's new car market in September.

The talks on 8–9 October in Beijing were led by EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Chinese commerce minister Wang Wentao. "We have reached a shared understanding to moderate China's export of hybrids and plug-in hybrids to the European Union," Šefčovič said. According to Reuters, the cut applies to forecast export growth over the next four years rather than current sales, and could exceed half. No baseline, timetable or mechanism was given.

Tariffs and concessions

Since 2024 the EU has imposed tariffs of up to 45.3% in total on Chinese electric cars, but hybrids were not covered. Under the deal China will lower tariffs on about €4bn of EU goods, including car parts. EU leaders will take up the matter at their summit on 15–16 October. "This is far from the end," Šefčovič said.

Poland

Chinese brands had 15.6% of the Polish market in September. The MG HS Hybrid+ costs PLN 117,900 on promotion, the MG ZS Hybrid+ PLN 88,900 and the BYD Atto 2 DM-i PLN 102,630. It is not clear whether the deal will affect their prices.
