Police to visit schools daily after attacks in Ostrołęka and near Wyszków

After two knife attacks at schools in the Mazovia region, police are to visit schools across Poland every day. By Friday morning they had checked more than 10,000 of them.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk ordered police to “appear in the school at least once a day, inside”. The visits are to be agreed with head teachers. “Sadly, these incidents keep happening,” Tusk said. Minister Marcin Kierwiński added: “Police patrols around schools will be strengthened.”

Two attacks in two days

On Wednesday 7 October at around 11:00, a 19-year-old injured 9 people with a knife at Vocational School Complex No. 4 in Ostrołęka: 5 pupils, 2 teachers and 2 bystanders. Their lives are not in danger. He has been charged on 9 counts, including attempted murder, and faces life in prison.

On Thursday at around 9:00 in Leszczydół-Nowiny near Wyszków, a 15-year-old former pupil attacked people with a knife at the entrance to a primary school. A 37-year-old caretaker was killed, and the head teacher and a teacher were injured. The Mazovia governor closed all primary schools in Wyszków municipality on Friday.

Checks and online rumours

According to the police tally on Friday morning, officers had checked “more than 10,000 sites”, and 10 people had been detained nationwide.

Rumours of further attacks spread online. Police said that “so far nothing indicates that such an event will actually take place”.
