Police in all 20,000 schools; 117 detained in three days, minister says things have calmed down
On Monday police officers are present at every school in Poland. Since Thursday they have carried out about 65,000 checks and detained 117 people. The education minister believes the situation has calmed down.
After Sunday's briefing of the services, the government decided that about 20,000 police officers would be at schools on Monday, twice as many as on Sunday. "Police will be in all Polish schools today, that is 20,000 institutions," Education Minister Barbara Nowacka told RMF FM. "I think the situation has calmed down," she added.
Three days in numbers
Over three days about 40,000 officers took part. They carried out about 65,000 checks at schools and detained 117 people, mostly aged between 13 and 19. Social media accounts glorifying Thursday's attacker have been blocked, and the number of educators from NASK, the national research institute that teaches online safety, is to double in the coming weeks. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński says there is no basis to speak of a nationwide online "challenge".
New rules
Nowacka wants rules allowing teachers to take dangerous items away from pupils. On Tuesday at 8:00 a Senate committee will discuss the bill on blocking illegal online content, which the Sejm passed by 242 votes to 61, with 136 abstentions. It will then go to the president. "We are dealing with a very grim fashion for violence," Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.
