Man detained after threatening Poland's prime minister and planning an attack

Police detained a man of about 60 in Lower Silesia on Sunday. According to the interior minister, he threatened Prime Minister Donald Tusk and planned to attack him. The case also concerns the defence minister.

Government spokesman Adam Szłapka said the prime minister was informed of the threat at about 7:00 on Sunday. The threats reached the State Protection Service, which passed them to the police. The case also concerns Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the minister coordinating the special services, issued an urgent statement, and the ABW, police and SOP met at the ABW's counter-terrorism centre.

The arrest

A man aged about 60 was detained on Sunday afternoon in Lower Silesia. According to interior ministry spokeswoman Karolina Gałecka, he was traced through analysis of his online activity and a tip from an informant. Police searched his flat. "The man who threatened Prime Minister Donald Tusk and planned an attack on him has been detained by the police," Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said. He said the suspect belongs to "very radical groups".

"We are treating this deadly seriously," Dobrzyński said. The prime minister thanked the services for their quick and decisive action.

The suspect's identity, any charges and whether he had weapons have not yet been disclosed. Some experts urge caution in judging the case until prosecutors make a statement.
