Kraków votes for a mayor today. Polls open until 9pm, with a half marathon in the city
On Sunday 11 October Kraków residents vote for mayor in the runoff of an early election. Polling stations are open from 7am to 9pm. The pre-election silence is in force.
The election is early because in May residents recalled mayor Aleksander Miszalski in a referendum. Since then the city has been run by acting mayor Stanisław Kracik. The runoff is between (alphabetically) Łukasz Gibała and Monika Piątkowska.
How to vote
Voting takes place in 454 districts: 412 regular ones and 42 special ones, for example in hospitals. Turnout will not be published during the day. "Make sure the ballot carries the stamp of the district electoral commission," says Barbara Golanko of the Kraków Electoral Office. In this election you cannot get a certificate to vote elsewhere or change your polling station.
Half marathon and road closures
At 10am the 12th PKO Cracovia Royal Half Marathon starts from Lema Street, with up to 18,000 runners. 33 polling stations are on or next to the route. The city centre is closed to traffic from 8:30am to 2pm, and Lema Street until 6pm.
The election silence lasts until polls close at 9pm, when TV stations will show the first exit polls.
