Mystery object off Helsinki delays Tallinn ferry by 6 hours
On Saturday evening the Finnish Coast Guard found a drifting funnel-shaped metal object. Passenger shipping was halted.
Key facts
- The object was found near Kustaanmiekka island, a few kilometres from central Helsinki, on a passenger shipping route.
- The 8 pm ferry to Tallinn left six hours late, and the waterway to the Suomenlinna fortress was closed.
- The navy examined the object. Its initial assessment is that it is an old mechanical part from a shipwreck.
What's next
- The object has been towed away and an investigation is under way.
- The Gulf of Finland was heavily mined during past wars. Shipping lanes have been cleared but are still monitored.
