Storm on the Baltic: gusts of up to 105 km/h on the coast, ferries cancelled

Poland's weather service IMGW has issued a level 2 strong wind warning for the northern part of the Pomeranian region. Right on the coast, gusts may reach 105 km/h.

The warning runs from 22:00 on Thursday 8 October until 15:00 on Friday. Wind gusts may reach 90 km/h, and up to 105 km/h along the coast. IMGW puts the probability at 90%.

Level 1 strong wind warnings also covered 18 counties in the Warmian-Masurian region. Around Elbląg, gusts may reach 80 km/h. These warnings are in force until 18:00.

Ferries and the port of Ustka

Ferry crossings were cancelled, including the “Wawel” on the Gdańsk–Nynäshamn route and the “Copernicus” on the Gdańsk–Karlshamn route. Waves damaged the port in Ustka. Travellers should check with the ferry operator before setting off.

Call-outs and power cuts

Firefighters in Pomerania were called out more than 50 times in 24 hours. The energy company Energa reports a dozen or so faults on its network, which may affect several thousand households.

The Government Security Centre (RCB) sent an alert to residents of several counties, including Słupsk, Lębork, Puck, Wejherowo, Nowy Dwór Gdański and Sławno. RCB alerts are sent by text message to phones in the affected area. “RCB recommends avoiding open spaces and securing property,” the alert said.
