Verstappen finally wins in Singapore: 73rd victory in his 250th start
Max Verstappen won the Singapore Grand Prix, leading from start to finish. It is his first win at Marina Bay. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli finished third and could clinch the title in Austin.
Verstappen started from pole, the 50th of his career, and led every lap. He also won Saturday's sprint. At the flag he was 7.335 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc. Kimi Antonelli was third (+24.573 s), Lando Norris fourth and Oscar Piastri fifth. It is the Dutchman's second win in a row, after Baku, and his first in Singapore. "It's taken a while, but I think this race was very good," he said.
Russell from the back
George Russell started 19th after an engine penalty and finished ninth. Lance Stroll, Franco Colapinto and Gabriel Bortoleto, whose car caught fire, retired. Lewis Hamilton was sixth and apologised to Ferrari for the strategy. "We lost two seconds that last lap," he said.
Title in Austin?
Antonelli has 340 points, 102 more than Russell. According to Sky Sports, the Italian will clinch the title in Austin (23–25 October) if he outscores Russell there by 23 points. The maths depend on the calendar, though: Canada's TSN reports that the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are at risk because of the US–Iran conflict.
