US PlayStation sales worst since 2013 as Xbox slumps: are consoles too expensive?

Circana data show that between January and August PlayStation sales in the US fell 25% and Xbox sales 33%. Average console prices, meanwhile, are at record highs.

The figures were posted on Bluesky by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella. They cover US console sales from January to August 2026. Xbox sales fell 33% year on year, the brand's steepest drop ever. PlayStation lost 25%, its worst since 2013. August alone was PlayStation's worst August since 2013 and Xbox's worst since 2020.

Record prices

At the same time Americans are paying more for consoles than ever. The average price paid for an Xbox was USD 529 (+26%) and for a PlayStation USD 597 (+20%), both US records. "Price sensitivity is becoming a real problem," Piscatella writes.

Switch 2 on top

Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in the US, although Nintendo also saw a decline. Rising console prices are blamed on the cost of RAM and components, driven by the boom in artificial intelligence. Piscatella hopes sales will improve in November, when GTA 6 arrives.
