Widar, 20, wins Tre Valli Varesine ahead of Pidcock
Belgium's Jarno Widar has taken his first professional win, beating Tom Pidcock and Matteo Jorgenson in a three-man sprint.
The 20-year-old Belgian rides for Lotto-Intermarché, and his first professional win came against some of the sport's biggest names.
A three-man sprint
The 196 km race ran from Busto Arsizio to Varese in Lombardy and was decided in a sprint between three riders. Widar beat Britain's Tom Pidcock of Pinarello Q36.5 and American Matteo Jorgenson of Visma-Lease a Bike. Quinn Simmons was fourth.
These are big names. Pidcock is a two-time Olympic mountain bike champion, and Jorgenson has won the Paris–Nice stage race.
A crash involving the police
The race was overshadowed by a serious incident: a police motorbike hit two Pinarello Q36.5 riders, Camprubí and Gloag. The authorities are investigating what happened.
Tre Valli Varesine is one of the autumn Italian one-day races that close out the road season.
