Świątek tenth in the race to the WTA Finals, 555 points short of qualifying
After losing to Elise Mertens in Beijing, Iga Świątek is 10th in the WTA Race rankings. She is 555 points behind eighth place, the last qualifying spot for the WTA Finals. Her next event is Wuhan from 12 October.
On Friday Świątek lost her Beijing quarter-final to Elise Mertens 6–7 (0), 3–6, her first career defeat to the Belgian. She is now 10th in the WTA Race, which decides who qualifies for the season-ending WTA Finals.
How far behind
Świątek has 3,799 points. She trails ninth-placed Marta Kostyuk by 111 points and eighth-placed Linda Nosková by 555. The top eight players of the season qualify for the WTA Finals.
Last chances
The Pole is staying in China. She will play in Wuhan (12–18 October) and may then play Ningbo and Tokyo, with about 2,000 points available across those events. Her first opponent in Wuhan is not yet known.
On Saturday, World Mental Health Day, Świątek wrote on Instagram: "In the daily rush it's worth stopping for a moment today and taking care of yourself… Take care of yourselves."
