Świątek crushes Jović to reach the Beijing quarter-finals
Iga Świątek beat 18-year-old American Iva Jović 6–1, 6–3 in the last 16 of the China Open. She will face Elise Mertens in the quarter-finals.
The match lasted 1 hour 35 minutes and was the first meeting between the two.
A lightning first set
The first set took 37 minutes. Świątek broke early and raced to a 5–0 lead. She hit 16 winners in the set and won all four points she played at the net.
In the second set the Pole again broke first to lead 2–0. Jović fought back to go 3–2 up, but Świątek broke in the seventh game and closed out the match on her first match point. Over the whole match she hit 28 winners and made 18 unforced errors.
The road to the quarter-finals
Earlier in Beijing she beat China's Xinyu Gao 6–2, 6–3, and then Croatia's Donna Vekić in three sets after trailing 5–2 in the second. Świątek won the China Open in 2023.
Mertens on Friday
Her quarter-final opponent is Belgium's Elise Mertens, ranked 19th, who knocked out Coco Gauff. Świątek has won both of their previous matches. The match is scheduled for Friday morning Polish time and will be shown on CANAL+ Sport 2.
