Małysz's record falls after 22 years as Hörl flies 136.5 m at Bergisel

Austria's Jan Hörl jumped 136.5 m on the Bergisel hill in Innsbruck. He broke the summer hill record that had belonged to Adam Małysz since 2004.

Hörl made his record jump on Thursday 8 October, in the first round of the Austrian championships. The 28-year-old jumped from gate 9.

A record from 2004

Małysz set the record on 11 September 2004 in the final of the Summer Grand Prix, jumping 136 m. Hörl beat that distance by half a metre.

The Pole's record had stood at Bergisel for 22 years. In that time nobody jumped further there in summer. A summer record covers jumps made in summer on plastic matting, not on snow.

Bergisel is one of the best-known ski jumping hills in the world. Every year it hosts one of the competitions of the Four Hills Tournament.

Embacher wins the Austrian title

Despite his record distance, Hörl did not become national champion. The title went to 20-year-old Stephan Embacher, who jumped 133.5 m in the first round.

Hörl and Aigner finished joint second. Both scored 267.4 points. Embacher is eight years younger than Hörl.

A new record holder

The new Bergisel summer record now stands at 136.5 m and belongs to Hörl. The Austrian is the first jumper to go beyond 136 m on the hill in summer.
